DADO MORONI

Dado Moroni

Dado Moroni is one of the most sought-after Italian jazz pianists in Europe and America. He made his debut at 17 with Tullio de Piscopo and Franco Ambrosetti with whom he still collaborates today. In 1987 he was called, the only European, along with pianists Hank Jones, Barry Harris and Roland Hanna, to serve on the jury of the Thelonious Monk International Piano Prize, held in Washington, DC. Dado Moroni is one of the very few Italian musicians whose biography is included in the important “Biographical Encyclopedia of Jazz” by Leonard Feather and Ira Gitler. He boasts prestigious and ongoing collaborations with the world’s great jazz stars. 2012 saw the release of a CD entitled “Two for Duke” produced by Via Veneto Jazz / Jandomusic as a duo with the
saxophonist Max Ionata, and in May of that year Dado was invited back to the Vicenza Jazz Festival along with fellow pianists Mulgrew Miller and Kenny Barron for a tribute to Thelonious Monk, and in July, with the same lineup plus pianist Eric Reed, he performed at the San Sebastian Festival in Spain.
In 2014 Dado paid tribute to the music of John Coltrane with a CD entitled “Five for John” ( Via Veneto Jazz / Jandomusic ) in the company of Joe Locke on vibraphone, Alvin Queen on drums, Marco Panascia on double bass and Max Ionata on tenor sax. This project was promoted throughout Europe with a two-week tour. In the same year again Via Veneto Jazz / Jandomusic produced another
CD by the Dado Moroni / Max Ionata duo this time dedicated to the music of Stevie Wonder, titled precisely “Two for Stevie,” and the duo performed in Japan and Hong Kong.
Since August 2014 Dado has been teaching at the Nuoro Jazz summer seminars.
In 2015 the CD Barbershop was released, ABeat editions, with Franco Cerri, Riccardo Fioravanti and Stefano Bagnoli. Dado also likes to try his hand at artists normally “far” from his sphere of action, always achieving interesting results. Lucio Dalla, Tiziano Ferro, Eros Ramazzotti, Mietta and Ornella Vanoni have requested his piano on several occasions, and with Mietta a joint project was even born titled “Quando il Jazz fa Pop” together with Furio Di Castri on double bass, Enzo Zirilli on drums and comedian Alessandro Bergallo, who already has to his credit many live performances as well as a special made in 2013 by Radiotelevisione Svizzera Italiana.
In December 2015, he began collaborating with and recording a CD with Karima Ammar, who will perform Christmas songs arranged by Moroni and performed with an unmistakable swinging rhythm section of grand class composed of Stefano Bagnoli and Riccardo Fioravanti.
